AFFINITY™ Pastoral Care Professional Certification

What Makes Some Churches Better Equipped to Care for People, Build a Team That’s Invested in the Vision and Shares the Responsibility, and Keep People Connected to the Church?

It isn’t simply having more committed leaders. It isn’t adding another ministry. And it isn’t asking the senior pastor to carry more. There is something that changes how equipped ministry leaders feel, how effectively the team shares the work of pastoral care, and whether people trust the pastoral care they receive enough to stay connected to the church. And it starts somewhere most churches aren’t looking.

What is at stake

When Pastoral Care Has No Clear System, Someone Always Pays the Price, and The Cost Is Higher Than Most Churches Realize.

YOUR WELL-BEING IS AT STAKE

You and your team stand to lose your own well-being.

The cost of continuing to handle crisis, trauma, mental-health concerns, grief, family problems, and complicated pastoral counseling without a clear system can be chronic stress, emotional exhaustion, compassion fatigue, burnout—and eventually you and your team can lose the desire to keep doing ministry at all.

YOUR MINISTRY CAPACITY IS AT STAKE

Your ministry stands to lose the team it needs.

When ministry leaders aren't truly invested in the vision, equipped to do the work, and prepared to share responsibility, the pastor becomes the bottleneck. In other words, too much of the ministry depends on the pastor to keep it moving. People disengage. Leaders burn out. Everything keeps coming back to the same few people—and the church never develops the ministry capacity it needs to grow.

YOUR PEOPLE’S TRUST AND CONNECTION ARE AT STAKE

Your people stand to lose their connection to the church.

People remember how the church treated them when they were grieving, traumatized, depressed, in crisis, or when their family was falling apart. Plain and simple, people remember how you made them feel. A poor pastoral-care experience doesn't just risk a complaint. It can cost the church trust, reputation, relationships, and ultimately church members who decide they will not stay where they did not feel cared for when they needed the church most.

AFFINITY™

BUILT FROM RESEARCH. SHAPED BY REAL MINISTRY.

I didn’t develop AFFINITY™ from the outside looking in.

A research-grounded system for knowing how to care for people, how to equip others to share that responsibility, and how to build a pastoral-care ministry people can trust.

BUILT FROM RESEARCH. SHAPED BY REAL MINISTRY.

I didn’t develop AFFINITY™ from the outside looking in.

I spent 14 years serving in pastoral ministry and more than 16 years working in human services, experiencing firsthand what happens when ministry and organizational leaders are expected to care for people facing depression, trauma, grief, family crises, mental-health concerns, and complicated life problems—often without a clear pastoral-care system to guide the work.

That experience eventually became the focus of my doctoral research.

I earned my Doctor of Education in Executive Leadership in Mental Health & Human Services from Houston Christian University, where my dissertation, Exploring Depression in the Black Church, Are African American Evangelical Clergy Willing to Integrate Secular Evidence-Based Mental Health Treatments with Their Religious Counseling Practices?, examined how clergy understand and respond to depression within their congregations.

My work at the intersection of faith, mental health, and human behavior has also focused on religious trauma, religious coping, pastoral care and pastoral counseling, mental-health education, and belongingness—and how each can influence the way people experience care, faith, leadership, and connection within religious communities.

My research helped me identify gaps that go far beyond mental-health awareness: pastoral scope, role clarity, culturally competent care, referral and collaboration, continuity of care, and what happens after someone brings a serious problem to the church.

Without this combination of research, ministry experience, mental-health leadership, and systems expertise, churches risk continuing to address pastoral care in fragmented pieces—without the integrated framework needed to equip their leaders, build an invested team that shares the responsibility, and keep people connected to the church.

And your investment doesn’t end with eight weeks of training. Upon successful completion of the certification program, you’ll receive a lifetime license granting you ongoing permission to use designated AFFINITY™ intellectual property—including the proprietary framework, tools, resources, policies, protocols, and pastoral-care system you’ve been trained to implement. FOUNDING COHORT
Enrollment is intentionally limited.
Why enrollment is limited

This is a cohort-based certification program, and enrollment is limited.

Because I personally teach the AFFINITY™ Pastoral Care Certification Program and participants complete an applied capstone as part of the certification process, each cohort has a limited number of available seats.

What happens when the cohort fills

Once this cohort reaches capacity, enrollment will close.

If you miss this cohort, you'll be placed on the AFFINITY™ waitlist until the certification program is offered again.

What founding members receive

This founding cohort receives the Founders Rate and, upon successful completion of the certification requirements, a lifetime license granting permission to use the designated AFFINITY™ intellectual property included with their certification.

Pastoral ministry. Human services. Mental-health leadership. Research. Systems.

AFFINITY™ brings those worlds together.

I built the AFFINITY™ Pastoral Care Certification Program to give ministry leaders something I believe the church has needed for a long time: a research-grounded system for knowing how to care for people, how to equip others to share that responsibility, and how to build a pastoral-care ministry people can trust.

A higher standard of pastoral care

This is how we care for people here.

IMAGINE THE DIFFERENCE

IMAGINE WHAT PASTORAL CARE COULD FEEL LIKE IN YOUR CHURCH.

01

Your Team Knows What to Do.

  • Imagine walking into your church knowing your ministry leaders are equipped to respond when someone comes to them grieving, overwhelmed, struggling emotionally, facing a family crisis, or simply needing someone to talk to.
  • You don't have to wonder whether they know what to say.
  • You don't have to worry about whether they'll recognize when a situation has moved beyond their pastoral scope.
  • And you don't have to be the person everybody is waiting for before care can happen.

Your team knows what to do.

02

Your Team Shares the Responsibility.

  • Imagine looking around at your ministry team and seeing people who are genuinely invested in your vision for caring for people.
  • They're not simply holding titles or waiting for instructions.
  • They understand the standard.
  • They know the process.
  • They have the tools.
  • They understand their roles.
  • And they are confidently sharing the responsibility for pastoral care with you.

Think about what that could feel like for you.

More supported.More confident in your team.Less emotionally exhausted.Less worried about what might happen when the next complicated situation walks through the door.
03

People Experience Care They Can Trust.

  • Now imagine what that feels like for the people you serve.
  • Someone comes to your church during one of the hardest seasons of their life—and instead of encountering confusion, inconsistency, or a ministry leader trying to figure out what to do in the moment, they experience care that feels thoughtful, organized, compassionate, culturally competent, and safe.
They know who to talk to.They know what happens next. They aren't forgotten after the first conversation.

They experience a church that doesn't just say, “We care about you.”

Your pastoral-care system shows them that you do.

  • And over time, that changes something bigger.
  • People begin to know your church as a place where they can bring their whole humanity. Your ministry team becomes stronger. Your leaders feel better equipped. Responsibility for care is shared. Trust grows. People feel like they belong.
  • And when people are hurting, they don't have to leave your church to find thoughtful, informed care.

By the end of your eight weeks in the AFFINITY™ Pastoral Care Certification Program, you won't simply have learned a framework.

You'll have your pastoral-care system.

Your policies. Your protocols. Your tools. Your care pathways. Your trained process. Your completed capstone. And your lifetime license to continue using the designated AFFINITY™ intellectual property you've been trained to implement.

You'll leave knowing:

This is how we care for people here.

Consider the ministry you want to build

What would change?

Have you ever imagined leading a thriving church where people feel genuinely cared for—not just preached to?
Have you ever wanted a ministry team that is just as invested in your vision for caring for people as you are?
Would it change your ministry if your leaders felt equipped and confident enough to share the responsibility for pastoral care with you?
Would you feel differently about your ministry if you knew your team had a clear process for responding when people come to the church with trauma, grief, mental-health concerns, family crises, and complicated life problems?
Do you want people to trust the care they receive from your church enough to remain connected—even during the most difficult seasons of their lives?
And if you could build that kind of pastoral-care ministry—with an equipped team, a clear system, and a higher standard of care—would you want to know how?

PASTORAL CARE SYSTEM EXPERIENCE

“I see this really as a certification course… where you have thousands of people certified.”

— Pastor Derrick Grant
The complete professional system

Here's What Your AFFINITY™ Pastoral Care Professional Certification Includes

01

THE AFFINITY™ PASTORAL CARE SOFTWARE & IMPLEMENTATION PORTAL

Your certification includes more than training. You receive access to the professional infrastructure designed to help you actually implement the AFFINITY™ Pastoral Care System.

Inside the AFFINITY™ Pastoral Care Software & Implementation Portal, your professional forms, assessments, policies, protocols, decision-support resources, care pathways, implementation tools, teaching videos, AFFINITY™ Student Manual, certification resources, and live-session replays are brought together in one professional environment.

You don't finish the certification and then have to figure out how to build the infrastructure yourself. The infrastructure is already there.

Learn It. Practice It. Build Your Pastoral Care System.

02

THE 8-WEEK AFFINITY™ CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

An eight-week certification experience designed to help you learn the AFFINITY™ system, apply the framework, build the necessary components, and begin implementing a higher standard of pastoral care within your church.

You won't just learn what pastoral care should look like.

You'll learn how to build it.

03

CARE 5™ — THE AFFINITY™ FIVE-STEP CARE FRAMEWORK

When someone comes to your church hurting, overwhelmed, grieving, in crisis, or facing a complex life situation, your leaders need more than good intentions.

They need to know what to do next.

CARE 5™ provides the framework:

PREPARE CAREORGANIZE CAREASSESS CARECONNECT CARECONTINUE CARE

You'll learn how to prepare your ministry for care, organize the people and processes responsible for it, assess what is happening with the person, connect them with appropriate support, and continue the care beyond the initial encounter.

So your leaders don't have to figure it out in real time.

04

THE AFFINITY™ PROFESSIONAL PASTORAL CARE SYSTEM

CARE 5™ gives you the five-step framework.

AFFINITY™ gives you the system surrounding it.

You'll learn how to establish the leadership, roles, access, intake, assessment, scope, crisis readiness, referral and collaboration, continuity, documentation, policies, culture, leader well-being, and organizational capacity that support a functioning pastoral-care ministry.

Because having people who care isn't the same thing as having a pastoral-care system.

05

THE AFFINITY™ PROFESSIONAL WORKING TOOLS

You don't have to start from a blank page.

Your certification includes the professional working tools that support the AFFINITY™ system—including the forms, assessments, decision-support resources, care pathways, referral and continuity resources, policies, protocols, and implementation tools developed for the system.

The professional architecture is already there.

You customize it. You implement it. You put it to work.

06

PASTORAL CARE POLICIES & OPERATING RESOURCES

A trustworthy pastoral-care ministry needs more than compassionate people.

It needs clarity, consistency, and accountability.

You'll receive resources that help establish the standards, responsibilities, boundaries, processes, and expectations that guide how pastoral care operates within your church.

So your leaders can know:

  • who does what,
  • what happens next,
  • what is within scope,
  • when to collaborate,
  • when to refer,
  • and how care continues.
07

HUMAN-CENTERED LEADERSHIP™

Because the people providing care are people, too.

AFFINITY™ incorporates Human-Centered Leadership into the pastoral-care system so your ministry considers the humanity of the people responsible for caring for others.

You'll work with the five domains:

Psychological Safety
Resilience & Burnout Prevention
Trauma-Informed Leadership
Compassionate Accountability
Values-Based Decision-Making

Because building the team means more than assigning people to ministry positions.

It means creating an environment where people can contribute, take responsibility, ask questions, acknowledge challenges, and care for others without carrying the entire ministry alone.

08

BUILT FROM DR. VANESSA R. BROOKS' RESEARCH

AFFINITY™ isn't a collection of pastoral-care ideas assembled from other programs. The system was developed from Dr. Vanessa R. Brooks' original research examining depression and pastoral care within the Black Church and the specific challenges revealed through that work.

That research became the foundation for the AFFINITY™ system, CARE 5™ framework, models, professional tools, policies, care pathways, decision-support resources, and implementation processes you will learn throughout this certification.

AFFINITY™ brings together professional knowledge at the intersection of:

faith + mental health + culture + pastoral care + leadership + organizational systems.

You'll learn to consider the whole person and the factors that can influence pastoral-care decisions—including mental health, theology, religious coping, culture, relationships, trauma, life circumstances, scope, and professional collaboration.

Because people are whole people—and pastoral care has to account for the whole person.

09

LIVE CERTIFICATION SESSIONS + SESSION REPLAYS

You won't be left to figure out how to apply the AFFINITY™ system on your own.

Throughout the eight-week certification experience, you'll participate in live 90–120 minute certification sessions with Dr. Vanessa R. Brooks designed to deepen your understanding, answer questions, work through application, and help you move from learning the system to implementing it.

Can't attend a session live? You'll receive access to the session replay inside the AFFINITY™ software so you can stay current with the certification experience.

10

DIRECT EMAIL SUPPORT DURING YOUR CERTIFICATION EXPERIENCE

Questions are going to come up when you start putting what you're learning into practice.

Throughout the eight-week certification experience, registered participants will have email support for questions related to the curriculum, implementation, and certification work.

Because professional learning shouldn't end when the live session does.

11

THE AFFINITY™ CERTIFICATION CAPSTONE

You won't earn your certification simply by watching videos or attending calls.

Your certification experience culminates in an AFFINITY™ capstone designed to demonstrate your ability to apply what you've learned and translate the AFFINITY™ system into professional pastoral-care practice.

This is where learning becomes application—and application demonstrates readiness.

12

YOUR AFFINITY™ PROFESSIONAL PASTORAL CARE CERTIFICATION

Successfully complete the certification requirements and earn your AFFINITY™ Professional Pastoral Care Certification.

Your certification recognizes your successful completion of the AFFINITY™ professional learning and application experience and will remain active for two years from the date it is awarded.

A professional certification representing a higher standard of pastoral care.

AND THEN THERE'S THE CERTIFICATION

AFFINITY™ Certified Pastoral Care Professional

You don't simply complete another online course.

You complete an 8-week professional certification built around the AFFINITY™ Professional Pastoral Care System and CARE 5™ framework.

You leave with more than information.

You leave with a framework, tools, processes, policies, leadership principles, and a professional pastoral-care system you can begin putting to work in your church.

So what are you really building?
A ministry where you feel equipped.
A team that shares the responsibility for care.
A pastoral-care experience where people feel safe, connected, that they belong, and genuinely cared for.
And ultimately, a church where pastoral care becomes part of the reason people trust the church, remain connected to it, and have a reason to stay.

AFFINITY™ PROFESSIONAL PASTORAL CARE CERTIFICATION

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the certification experience, participation, and what makes AFFINITY™ different.

Who is the AFFINITY™ Pastoral Care Professional Certification for?
AFFINITY™ is designed for pastors, ministry leaders, pastoral-care leaders, chaplains, and other professionals whose work involves providing or leading faith-based care.

It is especially valuable for leaders who want to feel better equipped to respond to complex pastoral-care needs, develop a ministry team that can share responsibility for care, and establish a pastoral-care experience people can trust.
Do I need a counseling or mental-health degree to participate?
No.

AFFINITY™ does not require you to become a therapist in order to become better equipped to provide pastoral care.

The certification helps you understand what belongs within pastoral care, recognize when a situation requires collaboration or referral, respond more confidently within your role, and build systems that help your church provide care responsibly and consistently.
Is AFFINITY™ a clinical or mental-health certification?
No. AFFINITY™ is a Professional Pastoral Care Certification.

It does not provide clinical licensure or authorize participants to diagnose or treat mental-health conditions.

Instead, AFFINITY™ strengthens the professional practice of pastoral care—including assessment, scope, care pathways, crisis readiness, referral, collaboration, continuity, leadership, documentation, policies, and organizational systems.
What will I be able to do after completing the certification?
The goal is not simply to leave with more information. You will learn how to apply and implement a professional pastoral-care system.

That includes knowing how to assess pastoral-care situations, determine appropriate next steps, work within appropriate scope, respond to crisis and complex concerns, collaborate and refer when necessary, establish continuity of care, use professional pastoral-care tools, and help develop a ministry team that can share responsibility for caring for people.

Ultimately, the goal is to help you feel equipped, build the team, and create a pastoral-care experience people can trust.
What makes AFFINITY™ different from another pastoral-care course or training?
AFFINITY™ is not a collection of generic pastoral-care information. It is a proprietary professional pastoral-care system developed from Dr. Vanessa R. Brooks's own research.

That research identified specific problems affecting how churches respond to mental-health concerns, complex life problems, pastoral-care needs, collaboration, referral, continuity, leadership, and the care experience itself. AFFINITY™ turns those research findings into a practical system designed to address those problems.

The CARE 5™ framework, AFFINITY™ models, professional tools, assessments, decision-support resources, care pathways, policies, protocols, implementation processes, and pastoral-care resources were developed from that body of research and the system Dr. Brooks built from it.

That means you are not enrolling in a program that simply teaches concepts you could collect from another course. The AFFINITY™ system and CARE 5™ framework are Dr. Brooks's proprietary intellectual property. You cannot obtain this particular framework, process, or collection of tools from another university, seminary, consultant, or pastoral-care program.

You'll learn the CARE 5™ framework, work with the professional tools and resources created to support it, develop policies and processes around it, examine leadership and organizational capacity through the AFFINITY™ system, and apply that research-grounded methodology to the pastoral-care environment you actually serve.
What if our church already has a therapist, counseling ministry, or referral list?
Those can all be important resources. But having resources—even good ones—is not the same as having the AFFINITY™ Professional Pastoral Care System.

Your church may already know who responds in a crisis. You may already have counselors, therapists, referral partners, policies, or care procedures. What you do not already have is Dr. Brooks's proprietary CARE 5™ framework and the AFFINITY™ tools, processes, policies, decision-support resources, care pathways, and implementation structure developed from her research.

Dr. Brooks's research identified specific gaps and problems churches were experiencing in pastoral care. AFFINITY™ was built to translate those findings into solutions—so the system is not simply adding another therapist, another ministry, another referral list, or another set of disconnected procedures.

AFFINITY™ gives those care activities a research-grounded framework for how pastoral care is prepared, organized, assessed, connected, and continued through CARE 5™. It provides a common structure for leadership, pastoral scope, decision-making, crisis response, collaboration, referral, continuity, documentation, policies, organizational culture, and the overall care experience.

A therapist can be part of your pastoral-care system. A counseling ministry can be part of your pastoral-care system. A referral list can be part of your pastoral-care system. AFFINITY™ is the proprietary framework that brings the pastoral-care system together.
Can my church or organization enroll a team?
Yes.

Churches and organizations may enroll up to five participants for $6,500. Additional participants may be added for $1,200 per person.

This option is especially appropriate for organizations that want multiple leaders learning the same pastoral-care framework, language, processes, and standards together.
How much time should I expect to commit during the eight weeks?
Live certification sessions will generally run 90–120 minutes, and participants should plan for approximately one additional hour each week for independent study, application, and work related to the certification and capstone.

The experience is intentionally spread across eight weeks so participants can learn, apply what they're learning, and develop their capstone while continuing to lead and serve.
What happens if I miss a live session?
You will have access to the session replay so that you can stay current with the certification experience.

Registered participants will also have email support during the eight-week certification experience for questions related to the curriculum, implementation, and certification work.
What is required to earn the AFFINITY™ Professional Pastoral Care Certification?
AFFINITY™ is a professional certification experience, not simply a course that awards a certificate for purchasing or watching content.

Participants are expected to engage with the certification curriculum, complete the required learning and application activities, and successfully complete the AFFINITY™ capstone requirements demonstrating their ability to apply the system.

Certification is awarded upon successful completion of the established program requirements.
How long is my AFFINITY™ Professional Pastoral Care Certification valid?
AFFINITY™ Professional Pastoral Care Certification is valid for two years from the date the certification is awarded.

Certified professionals will receive information about renewal requirements before their certification period expires.
Are refunds available after I enroll?
No. All purchases are final and non-refundable.

Because participants receive access to proprietary AFFINITY™ intellectual property, curriculum, professional resources, tools, training, and the certification experience, refunds are not offered after enrollment.

What AFFINITY™ does commit to is delivering the professional certification experience, curriculum, resources, tools, support, and guidance represented in the program.
Does completing AFFINITY™ guarantee specific results for me or my church?
No certification program can guarantee a particular ministry, organizational, financial, retention, or congregational outcome.

AFFINITY™ provides the professional education, proprietary frameworks, tools, systems, resources, and guidance designed to help participants establish a higher standard of pastoral care. How those resources are implemented—and the outcomes that follow—will depend on the participant, leadership team, organization, and circumstances.
Can I use the AFFINITY™ materials to train other people after I'm certified?
No. Certification in AFFINITY™ does not authorize you to teach, certify, license, reproduce, sell, distribute, or create training from AFFINITY™, CARE 5™, or any proprietary AFFINITY™ materials.

Your certification recognizes your successful completion of the AFFINITY™ Professional Pastoral Care Certification and your preparation to apply the system within the permissions provided with the program. Authorization to teach, train, certify, facilitate, license, or commercially distribute the AFFINITY™ system requires separate written authorization from Brooks Consulting & Training Solutions, LLC.
